January 2011 Paw Print
We would like to invite Victory E.S. families to participate in the following language arts project. We can take this opportunity to explore our diverse cultural backgrounds and heritages more closely.
Grades K-2 - We ask parents to please write a short essay describing a family tradition or a family “story” which they would like to pass down to their children. It could be a “Coming to America” story; a “how grandma met grandpa” story; a story of perseverance through rough times; a story about a special song or event; or a story of how a particular holiday is celebrated in their family and the foods surrounding it. Essays could be as simple as your family would like, but it is important that each family participate as much as they can. Stories can be typed or handwritten. Students can then cut and paste the paragraphs or the pages of their “family story” on construction paper and illustrate each section using some of the drawing techniques previously taught by Mrs. Porch.
Grades 3 -5: Students can conduct interviews with their parents or grandparents and then write an essay based on what they have learned. They too can then illustrate their stories. These Family Stories will be displayed somewhere in the building.
This will be a wonderful example of writing with an audience in mind (our school community) and having a real purpose for writing, to share in our diversity and strength as a community - exactly the kind of opportunity we want to provide for our students.
We look forward to reading your stories! Send in completed projects to the attention of Mrs. Showkatian, ESOL team.
