Welcome to Mrs. Salley's Second Grade Class.  2019-2020 will be a great year!

 

 


 

 

A note from Mrs. Salley- I hope everyone is enjoying this unplanned time home with family- take it as a time to slow down, breathe and embrace loved ones. Although times are a bit uncertain right now, just remember that we have each other and every storm eventually passes. Unfortunately, I am unable to get into my school email account. If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to reach out to me at Salleyka16@gmail.com. I have been in contact with the Second grade team and will do my best to guide you through this whole "virtual" learning experience. Although I was supposed to be out until March 30th, I am happy to assist you in anyway that I can during this time.  


What is going on in Second Grade? 
​Reading: 
 Before leaving school on March 13th the class had finished up learning about non-fiction text features including table of contents, headings, bold print, glossary, index, captions, and diagrams. Students worked on using background knowledge to understand a topic, used text features to ask and answer questions, and worked to identify the main idea and supporting details. The next reading unit will be poetry. We will use various reading skills to read poems and use our senses to make inferences, visualize, and make connections.

Writing: 
Throughout the last few weeks, Students wrote various informational texts. Which included "All About" books about different topics including themselves and the Famous Americans that they learned about in Social Studies. Next, we will write our own poems using descriptive language, similes, metaphors, and describe feelings. We will be writing various poems such as acrostic, haiku, cinquain, and free verse.


Social Studies/Science:
Students recently finished our Famous Americans unit, Within this unit we talked about how communities change over time. Our next unit will be science. In this force and motion unit, students will experience how different things move (roll, spin, push, pull) as well how different forces affect objects (like gravity and magnetism).

​Math: 
Students have finished our unit on probability and graphing. We collected data and made bar graphs and pictographs. We also analyzed the data by answering questions about the graphs. Our next unit consists of reviewing and building on previous concepts/skills such as comparing/contrasting, 10 more than/10 less than, 100 more than/100 less than, place value, addition and subtraction, and story problems.

School Closing/Student Work
With this extended school closure, the second grade team will be providing resources and activities to work on at home. As directed by the county, students do not have assigned work to complete at this time. Look back here often, for any resources
 to work on at home.
